On May 1, 2025, BRUSA, one of the world's leading providers of energy conversion solutions for electric mobility, celebrated its 40th anniversary. Since its founding by Josef Brusa in 1985, the company has grown from a small business specializing in solar and electric vehicle components into a global technology company with over 500 employees and locations in Europe, America, and Asia.
From vision to reality
Josef Brusa, the company's founder and a young electrical engineer, was motivated from the beginning to enhance mobility, making it more efficient, sustainable, and less dependent on fossil fuels. "Our society is over 80% dependent on non-renewable energies, and mobility performs particularly poorly in this regard. Electric drives offer a viable solution, given their efficient use of resources," says Brusa.
From its initial involvement in the solar vehicle sector in the 1980s to its current state-of-the-art technologies, such as inductive charging systems or advanced on-board chargers, BRUSA has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. The foundation for this was laid in the "Tour de Sol" solar vehicle race, a pioneering platform for solar energy and electric mobility from which BRUSA emerged.
Innovations for a sustainable future
For over four decades, BRUSA has driven and helped shape numerous innovative developments that are now essential to modern electric mobility. These include contactless charging using inductive technology, powerful motor technologies, and the world's first charger that can recharge 100 km in just one hour from a standard household socket. As a member of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) technical committee, BRUSA has also played an active role in developing today's CCS plug for fast charging of electric vehicles.
Global presence and local responsibility
Today, the BRUSA Group is divided into three companies:
- BRUSA Elektronik AG focuses on the development of inductive charging systems for automotive applications.
- BRUSA HyPower AG develops and manufactures products for highly efficient energy conversion systems such as DC/DC converters and directional and bidirectional on-board chargers.
- BRUSA Technology AG develops customized complete system solutions for energy conversion systems and electrification projects.
All three companies are headquartered in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley in Switzerland, where BRUSA's history began. With additional locations in Germany, the United States, and China, BRUSA is close to its customers and develops customized solutions for the global market.
Electric mobility is no longer limited to the automotive sector. While BRUSA is well known for its expertise in electric vehicles, the company's field of activity encompasses a wide range of other innovative markets.
